A friend recommended the book Awakening the Buddha Within, and told me that the book had helped him spiritually after a death in his family. I was drawn to Buddhism immediately, generally due to its belief in compassionate love and bounty towards all. However, the ideas of no-attachment, centeredness, and no-self did not sit well with me. Initially, these three Buddhist philosophies appeared to be bland compared to the color and vibrancy of compassionate love. I was raised(a) in a go-getter environment. Ambition and achievement were permeative to both aspect of life. My family was mildly religious; attendance at easter and Christmas services at the Methodist church was a must, solely the state of my psyche was generally not a priority. My sense was not an entity that could make straight As or aspire to be a doctor. I bought into this achievement-based lifestyle, and I blossomed into a college student with a restlessness that constantly had me looking at for the next task to conquer. When I was presented with the deaths of my friends, I applied this fashion of thinking to my own mortality.

I channeled my restlessness and ambition towards a kind of somebody-search, and also towards a greater appreciation for life. I reveled in unique art, music and books. I gained an appreciation for individuality, and I truly believed that madness and passion were the only prerequisites for genius.
