Operations management at Oregon facility Essay
There are a number of problems in the operations at the Oregon Facility which significantly impacts on its production. These problems include growing internal pressure for a new distribution facility in the Pacific Northwest. As well, there are quality related problems in Nebraska as well as material and inventory handling problems which also lead to an increase in production cost. Despite customer service being a very important aspect in the positive growth of any company, the facility is also coupled with customer service problems within its distribution locations where most customers end up wasting a lot of time in picking up their products. All these problems have since led to a decline in the performance. These problems have their significance in that they trigger the divisional research and engineering departments located at these facilities to provide internal consultation for the divisional research and engineering groups. Therefore these departments are motivated to look into the matter thus they can also identify other looming problems before they arise. (Mason & Jablokow, 2006, pp. 78-82). Another significance of the problems encountered in all the three facilities is that these problems enable the use of operation management tools geared towards improving the existing problems by developing ways that lead to significant changes and these impact on the whole facility at large not just the areas facing problems. (Simester, 2006). Solving the aforementioned problems at the T, P and S facilities, will subsequently lead to relative benefits that may subsequently arise. These benefits include the realization of increased performance for the capacity. Increase in their performance may also result to lower production costs and in turn this may also lead to fair prices that may attract the consumers. (Pearson, 2007). Solving the customer service problems means that the customer satisfaction will be raised. When customers are satisfied they are likely to keep on buying products from the Oregon facility and this will increase the facilityââ¬â¢s sales volumes.

Renewable Energy Essay
Green power, renewable energy, solar power, wind power, electric/hybrids. What is this? What can I do? Many may not know these terms, what they actually consist of, and how we can all do our part and help. What can any ordinary person do in our everyday lives to help care for Mother Earth? Renewable energy sources; solar, wind, and power these small changes can ensure a cleaner, safer and longer sustaining environment for our childrenââ¬â¢s grandchildren. Can renewables really be the way of the future? Some do agree that yes, it can. Solar power for instance, due to the fact that energy from the sun is clean, free, abundant, and infinitely renewable. It does not emit fumes, not dangerous to produce, and definitely does not need to be extracted at the expense of human, financial and environmental cost from below the surface of the ground. In the article, State Solar Plans Are As Big As All Outdoors states, ââ¬Å"The expectation is that renewables will transform Californiaââ¬â¢s electricity system,â⬠says Terri Oââ¬â¢Brien, who helps vet sites for new facilities for the California Energy Commission. The way to have solar power is provided through solar panels they can be placed on rooftops or buildings, on the sides or just on stand in an open area. When looking at Solar Thermal facilities to power cities with energy, like the one owned by Palo Alto based Ausra Inc, this is where the unsightly comes into play, rows of gigantic mirrors covering an area as big as 2 football fields. This poses a question of, ââ¬Å"How can these solar panels work when the sun doesnââ¬â¢t shine?â⬠No power can be generated and thereââ¬â¢s no way to store. ââ¬Å"Climate change is the greatest challenge that mankind has ever faced,â⬠said Peter Darbee, President and Chief executive of PG & E and head of its paren t S.F. PG&E Corp. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s imperative to seek out the most cost effective solutions.â⬠Cost effective possibly but at the price of wasted land. A second renewable source; wind power. A small town in Denmark known as, ââ¬Å"renewable energy island.â⬠It is the first of it is the first of its kind. Showing the world its positive prospects on one end, yet natures devastation on the other. We have all seen those big turbines way up in the hills, as a child I often wondered what they were but I remember thinking how big they were and just watching them spin in the wind. Wind power seems as genuine and legit as solar power, having as many advantages as disadvantages. Both are clean renewable energy sources, again neither are extracted from the earth, raw materials are free but neither solar nor wind power can generate enough electricity the way fossil fuels or nuclear power can. Just as the sun does not always shine for the panels, the wind will not always blow for the turbines. Unless you are from Samso AKA ââ¬Å"renewable energy islandâ⬠where in fact the wind off the Kattegat blows continuously. The town of Samso is more like a big family. It took the entire island in cooperation to achieve their status. Taking into consideration the pros and cons of wind powered turbines, where the ability to generate power to all the homes outweighed the environmental impact of the killing of birds and bats due to the turbines spinning. Mr Hermansen of Denmarkââ¬â¢s, ââ¬Å"renewable energy island,â⬠stated that, ââ¬Å"one reason to live here can be social relations,â⬠he said, ââ¬Å"This renewable energy project could be a new kind of social relation, and we used that.â⬠They show that anyone can have wind power one does not need to be special, well educated, or rich to accomplish renewable energy, one just has to have the drive to make a difference. Lastly, electric vehicles, sounds interesting and fun as it rolls off your tongue. EVââ¬â¢s or not to be; once again it seems to be the question. The notion of EVââ¬â¢s has been brought back to the table, yet again. In 1976, Congress approved funding for ââ¬Å"electric and hybridâ⬠research. That same year Forbes reported that, ââ¬Å"the electric cars rebirth is as sure as the need to end our dependence on imported oil.â⬠EVââ¬â¢s have been around for some time now though personally never gave them a second thought, that is until I read the article The Great Electric Car Experiment by Daniel Yergin. Yergin discusses the need for EVââ¬â¢s to not only reduce pollution and to offset the carbon emissions. EVââ¬â¢s have come a long way since its first debut between 1996 & 1999 to todayââ¬â¢s Nissan LEAF (Leading, Enviromentally friendly,à Affordable, Family car) batteries are smaller, cars are more compact, more miles to battery ratio, eye appealing, and co st friendly. Honestly I myself had been thinking of purchasing a Hybrid, rather than a EV due to same concerns many other folks have. Is it really affordable or too good to be true? How many miles can I drive before recharging? Where do I recharge? Will it just die and leave me stranded? All these questions are slowly being answered, but these questions and concerns will way heavy on whether how quickly EVââ¬â¢s will be accepted and learned as ââ¬Å"the way to go.â⬠By 2020 there will be more EVââ¬â¢s/Hybrids on the road. ââ¬Å"An automobile revolution is coming, but itââ¬â¢s traveling in the slow lane.â⬠I found Green Power to have many interesting articles. It was very eye opening. It has made me think about how I and family use energy. Turning out the light upon exiting a room, using energy efficient bulbs, buying energy star appliances ââ¬â all of which we have done. My perspectives did indeed change a bit since reading more on renewable sources. If I could afford to I would install solar panels on my home yet I do not fully support solar farms or wind turbines, I definitely would not put a turbine near my home. I love nature too much and could not stand to see birds dying by flying into the turbines. Bottom line is we all need to do our part in helping save our earth. If I must sacrifice and by an EV, pay more in taxes, by better appliances and/or update my home. I would do so. I currently try to make little by little changes since every little bit counts for a better tomorrow. Iââ¬â¢m happy to say that Iââ¬â¢m pulling my own weight. What You Need To Know Before Writing A Criminology Term Paper: Hot Picks from Our Writers Understanding the ethical and legal issues that surround critical decisions is very important in this profession. Contrary to what most students think, criminal justice is not a ââ¬Å"YESâ⬠or ââ¬Å"NOââ¬â¢ profession. It allows a student to think and develop own perspectives on different societal issues. As a student in this line of profession, you should identify and appreciate different issues that affect the well-being of humans in the society. For instance, protecting the environment is a significant issue in criminal justice. You may need to write a term paper to defend a perspective on environmental protection. When writing such a paper, you must show your commitment to the position you have taken by providing relevant examples and evidence. You need to understand that your lecturer is testing a lot more than the concepts they taught in class. Choosing a topic may be a big problem to a student writing a criminal justice term paper. The instructor may decide to choose a topic on behalf of the student. In case the topic is not chosen, you may need to explore the research problem and develop your own. Some of the common topics in criminal justice term papers include: Environmental protection; Racial profiling in criminal justice system; Police brutality; Equality and social justice; Death penalty; Public protection versus individual rights. Pre-Writing Techniques It is important to understand the subject matter before deciding on the artistic styles to apply in a paper. The instructor may be testing your ability o interpret the theoretical concepts that were taught. As a student, they need you to think beyond the theories they explained in the class. To record positive performances, you must indicate that you understand and appreciate the legal and ethical issues that are encountered in criminal justice. Here is the step-by-step guide that you need to follow to get the best out of a criminology term paper. First, you understand that the assessments you handle in criminal justice are meant to help you rehearse and store the information you learnt during the lectures. Second, you must recognize the fact that criminology term papers require many preparations. You need to understand what your professor needs. The grading criteria changes from one institution to another. The most important thing is to understand what the instructor needs and respond accordingly. The grading criterion is the same in almost every criminal justice term paper. Plagiarism is one of the most important aspects that every criminal justice instructor takes very seriously. Plagiarism is stealing another personââ¬â¢s work and passing him or her off as your own. You will not receive any point if you steal another personââ¬â¢s work. Another important area that is often considered when establishing the grading policy in most criminal justice term papers is the literature review. This part requires you to explore previous literature and effectively relate them to the topic that you are discussing. It is important to understand what the lecturer may be looking for in the literature review section before you begin writing. Literature review requires a comprehensive research. Depth and comprehensiveness are some of the components that are assessed in the literature review. You must show the examiner that you used a sufficient number of credible sources to explore the topic. In addition, the examiner is looking for whether you used credible scholarly sources. It is important to point out that not every criminal justice term paper will require conducting a literature review. You may not be asked to complete a literature review in argumentative papers. Nonetheless, you need to understand that the scholarly articles you use to support your arguments are relevant and credible. The analysis is another essential component of criminal justice term papers. Virtually every term paper requires students to show their analytical skills. You are required to interpret and adequately describe the major themes and findings. The instructor wants to know whether you have understood the issues that surround the topic. You can best do this by critically examining the subject matter. The instructor is also interested in the quality of criticism. You need to thoroughly examine the weaknesses and strengths of every argument that you put across. Most importantly, you need to present solutions in the analysis portion. It is imperative to present the best alternative that can be used to solve the problem you have identified. Formatting a Criminal Justice Term Paper Overview The general format used in criminal justice term papers are the same. You must begin with the introduction before moving to the main body. The conclusion is the final part and it involves a concise summary of the points you have discussed in the main body. It is important to point out that some term papers may require students to go directly to the discussion without including the introduction or the conclusion. It is important to double check the instructions to understand the format. The three parts, introduction main body and conclusion, are discussed in details in (Criminal Justice Term Paper 2). Introduction This is a very important part of a criminal justice term paper. It helps the writer to explore the overall background of the research problem, the extent to which it affects a given population and some past attempts to resolve it. The introduction orients the reader to the whole issue that is to be discussed.à It is important for the writer to grab the attention of the reader at the introduction. This can be done by stating startling facts or statistics that relate to the topic under discussion. Example: Did you know that murder rate in the United States has been increasing by over 3% each year for the last ten years? Main Body The main body is the heart of your term paper. Remember you examiner want to understand whether you have understood the concepts and issues that relate to your topic. First, you must be articulate when present your arguments in the main body. The intention is to synthesize the issue and ultimately suggests a solution.à You should consider the following when writing the main body of your criminal justice term paper: Begin every paragraph by writing a relevant topic sentence. The topic sentence should summarize the main argument in that particular paragraph. Be logical in your arguments Support your arguments using practical examples Use transition words when moving from one paragraph to the other. The main body may be structured in the following way: Argument/Claim: You should begin by stating your argument in the topic sentence. Analysis: Assess each piece of your argument using evidence from different scholarly works. You also need practical examples to support your claims. Opposing Argument: It is important to point out some of the perspectives that argue against your position. Solution: Try to present a reasonable solution that can be used to solve the problem. Conclusion As previously mentioned the conclusion part is where you summarize your arguments and restate your thesis. You need to indicate whether the hypothesis you had in the introduction has been proved or disapproved. Post-Writing Criminal Justice Term Paper Tips A number of considerations should be made once you have written your criminal justice term paper. It is likely that you will be tired after the writing process. You need to take about one hour away from the computer after you are done writing. This break should help your brain to refresh. The job is not done if you have not proofread your paper to ensure that you have written exactly what you needed. The following criminal justice term paper tips prompts can help improve the quality of your term paper: Take a break of at least one hour after completing the term paper. You may divide proofreading for several sessions. For instance, you begin by proofreading introduction part before moving to the main body. Ask a friend, family member or mentor to review your paper before you submit it. You may need a ââ¬Ëthird eyeââ¬â¢ to help check your paper for any error.

IBM Corporation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
IBM Corporation - Essay Example Strengths of IBM Corporation include knowledge, relationships, selling and history. The challenges of the company are based on high quality of products and services. Direct sales force maintains a relationship. Among the weaknesses are high competition and rapidly changing technology market (IBM boosts sales productivity, n.d.). The innovative PC technology is not cheap and that is why not all the potential customers can afford it today. IMB, in contrast to Dell Corporation, tries to maintain high standards of service proposing and selling (the most important) to its customers high quality products. In this case IMB takes into account both internal and external stakeholders (Crawford, Benedetto, 2003). Opportunities of IBM Corporation are local area networks, the Internet and training of the staff. The increasing opportunities of the Internet offer another area of strength in comparison to the box-on-the-shelf major chain stores (McDonald, Christopher, 2003). Customers want more help with the Internet, and IBM Corporation is in a better position to give it to. IBM will strengthen its long-standing commitment to 64-bit computing. For more than three decades, the power of microprocessors has doubled every 18 to 24 months, and most observers expect that to continue for another 10 years. The same progress is being made in other functions in silicon, such as graphics processing. Some portables will have the full power of desktop machines (Clarke, 2001). The challenges of the company are to follow the technological trends of computer industry and develop new products for professional users. For instance, notebook processors will double in power every two years, "to 12 GHz in five years, predict industry observers. Disks will shrink and may be replaced by solid-state memory. Displays will grow clearer, brighter and more energy-efficient and may even unfold to desktop size. The efficiency of batteries will improve, but perhaps not enough to keep up with power-hungry applications such as multimedia and wireless communications" (Anthes, Brewin, 2002). For this reasons, IBM strategies should integrate technology refresh provisions early in the design process of major systems and components to allow upgrades during development, production and system operation. Cost leadership (Porter, 1985), however, is a sustainable source of competitive advantage only if barriers exist that prevent competitors from achieving the same low costs. In an era of increasing technological improvements in manufacturing, manufacturers constantly leapfrog over one another in pursuit of lower costs. At one time, for example, IBM enjoyed the low-cost advantage in the production (Winograd, 1997). Then the Japanese took the same technology and, after reducing production costs and improving product reliability, gained the low-cost advantage. IBM fought back with a highly automated printer plant in North Carolina, where the number of component parts was slashed by more than 50 percent and robots were used to snap many components into place. Despite these changes, IBM ultimately chose to exit the business; the plant was sold (Prahalad, Hamel, 1994). Competitive advantage (Porter, 1985) of IBM Corporation is driven more by sales and performance management than by manufacturing and product innovations. The direct sales model (or other near-direct models) has been successful in the U.S., and the industry is moving more in that

Personal Leadership Development Strategy Research Paper - 1
Personal Leadership Development Strategy - Research Paper Example The vision of leadership therefore places more attention on the relationship between an individual leader and the groups, while at the same time placing more emphasis on collective development. In these contexts, leadershipââ¬â¢s relationship to capacity development is often viewed in three levels: individual, organizational and societal. Of these three main levels, societal leadership development often offers the most sustainable change, but also the most difficult to reach, monitor and by an extension evaluate. This paper analyzes personal leadership development, my current leadership state, weaknesses and strengths and it will take to reach an ideal leadership state. Success does not come on a silver platter. It only comes when you are able to face your challenges obstacles which are associated with being a leader. This process entails having adequate information of your strengths and the weaknesses that are inherent within you. Listed are my weaknesses which have contributed o r hindered my personal leadership growth, skills which I intend to enhance my course at the end of my studies; Being compassionate Hardworking Sociable Action oriented and practical High level of integrity Forgiving Having a high level of personal and social intelligence. Leadership Reviewed When looked from an organizational perspective, leadership is the ability of guiding a group of individuals that are in the organization, and thus involves creating and instituting a very clear vision and outline for an organization (Grohmann & Kauffeld, 2013). In this context, sharing a vision with other people or employees in the company aims at creating a unified platform so that fellow organizational employees can follow the companyââ¬â¢s objectives without any compromise, and offering information, and other parameters and methods that are required for the accomplishment of the companyââ¬â¢s vision. Additionally, leadership involves the process of organizing and coordinating various pr ogram actions and activities, and other inherent conflicting positions that may derail workers and organizational stakeholders from achieving the desired organizational levels. On the other hand, leadership management involves the process of planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and control both human and non-human resources in an organization so as to achieve the required organizational levels. Management of people in the organization therefore is the art of planning, organizing and coordinating people and resources in the organization without compromising organizational goals and resources (John, 2002). When examined exclusively, management bears certain characteristics that define organizational efficiency and effectiveness: it involves a continuous process that is often in motion; the leader has to undertake certain functions and responsibilities in an ongoing process and allocating resources to ensure that organizational objectives are met without compromising the obje ctives of individual employees in the organization. The modern concept of organizational management views management and leadership as synonymous. In this understanding Neirott & Paolucci (2013) contend that leadership is a result driven process that is multidisciplinary in nature; it is a process that embraces focus in achieving the intended organizational goals and results through working with and by people that have diverse

Freedom and Determinism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Freedom and Determinism - Essay Example Through determinism concept, freedom is driven by several aspects in human live including mental status, past life experience, physical factors, theological matters, biological concerns and so on. However, criminals also try all evasion avenues possible to escape any convictions, possibly using their lawyers. With this understanding, the stand of the attorney general and the jury that Penry's behavior may be a scheme purposed to deception, as opposed to arguments on childhood abuse and diminished mental capacity may be worth. Penry's side felt that his behavior was as a result of mental disturbance, with the other side believing that the behavior was out of ignorance but not mental retardation. Penry's lawyers hold that moral responsibility depends on mental stability. They suggest that the case should be waved because could the accused be smart mentally, then the crime could not take place (Doob, 2006, 11). Several aspects of determinism can be used to explain the varied views and opinions of the two sides. Nomological or causal determinism can be used to necessitate and explain present and past events. The horrific treatment of Penry by his mother should have impacted on the way he behaved by the belief that the past can influence the present. This is backed by scientific determinism or deterministic dogma which provides that cause, effect and precise eventual combination engenders particular outcomes at given moments. Events that Penry underwent at young ages accumulated to influence his behavior. Horrific treatment of the accused by his mother tells us what character the mother was. Biological determinism argues that desire, belief and behavior of an individual can be mould by endowment of genetics (Doob, 2006, 13). As a result, Penry may have inherited bad habits from her mother. In defining a disease, genetics is treated as a vital element, meaning that ailments are linked to gene tics. In theological determinism, daily happens are determined by God. This takes place through a form of omniscience, knowing ones actions in advance and decreeing ones actions in advance. The controversy of this determinism is how free will can be deemed free when someone has already planned for it. Thus it can be argued that this is the way God programmed the life of Penry. The above concepts of determinism link it to excuses of behaving unethically. Hard determinism applies environmental and hereditary means in influencing morality. Therefore, people do not have to belief ethically if they don't believe in uncaused free will. Soft determinists say that causation isn't acted unpredictably neither should it be viewed as compulsory or else a constraint (Doob, 2006, 12). Based on the above facts about determinism, prosecution judges should be very careful in establishing whether the conduct of the accused was genuine. This is the starting point for fairness to both sides and legal system itself. In the same line of thought, the society requires justice from legal institutions. These institutions are primarily set up to safeguard the rights of individuals and the general society. As above stated, the jury should take time to determine what made the man behave this way. If it was intentional, then the man is a potential threat to the society, indicating

The Relationship Between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth Essay Example for Free
The Relationship Between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth Essay The relationship between a husband and wife is affected by their individual traits and affects their decisions together. This is exemplified by Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in Shakespeares play, Macbeth. Macbeths courage, ambition, and ambivalence combined with Lady Macbeths own ambition, cunning, and manipulative nature interact act to culminate in the final decision at the end of Act I to murder Duncan. Macbeth is first introduced by the wounded captain as a brave warrior and valors minion when the captain reports to Duncan, For Brave Macbeth (well he deserves that name). / Disdaining Fortuneâ⬠¦ (1.2.18-19). His ambition emerges after he hears the witches prophecies. He becomes willing to do any manner of gruesome act to gain the throne when he says, The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step / on which I must fall down or else oerleap, / For in my way it lies (1.4.55-56) after he finds out Duncans son is heir and between him and the throne. Another of Macbeths traits, along with bravery and ambition, is his ambivalence. This is particularly obvious in scene 7 of Act I when Macbeth debates in a lengthy soliloquy whether he should kill Duncan. He lists reasons why he shouldnt commit the murder and a reason why he should, making his decision at the end known to Lady Macbeth: We will proceed no further in this business (1.7.34). These qualities conflict with each other and Lady Macbeths traits as well throughout Act I. Lady Macbeth is a complicated character in that she has qualities perceived as masculine as when Macbeth says, Bring forth men-children only / For thy undaunted mettle should compose / Nothing but males (1.7.83-85) and yet we dont know what drives her unwavering decision to murder Duncan. Is she doing ti for her husband as she suggests when she says â⬠¦the golden round, / Which fate and metaphysical aid doth seem ? To have thee crowned withal (1.5.31-33) or is she doing it for her own benefit to gain the privileges and luxuries of a queen of Scotland? Lady Macbeth is not only ambitious but sneaky enough to fulfill her ambitions as she shows when she advises Macbeth, Bear welcome in your eye, / Your hand, your tongue. Look like th innocent / flower, / But be the serpent under t (1.6.76-78). She follows her own advice when she greets Duncan as the humble servant with a smile andà gracious words while she is secretly planning his murder. Another assumed unnatural quality in women of the time is Lady Macbeths ability to manipulate. She demonstrates this when she convinces Macbeth to murder Duncan even after he decided not to, when she says, When you durst do it, you were a man; / And to be more than when you were, you would / Be so much more the man (1.7.56-58). Not only is she manipulating him, shes bullying him into the act by insulting his manhood. It is already insulting in todays society, but in Macbeths immensely patriarchal time, its all the more offensive. Lady Macbeths qualities make her a catalyst in the play because of her effect on Macbeth. Macbeths traits vie for control throughout the act. His ambition makes him want the throne but bravery and chivalry as a servant of the king keeps him in check. This ambivalence allows him to be easily manipulated by Lady Macbeth. She is ambitious as well but cant do anything due to the restrictions of their society. Therefore, she uses her sneakiness to persuade Macbeth to murder Duncan. By the end of Act I, Macbeth has undergone a huge change from being a brave and loyal servant of the king to a conniving, power hungry killer. Macbeth eventually decides to kill Duncan because of his ambition, Lady Macbeths ambition, and her ability to get what she wants. Shakespeare, William. Macbeth. London: Washington Square Press, 2003.
